The details of this Sample Design, including all the parameters used to generate it, are included below. Sample designs must belong to a Study Plan.

Description

All sampling required will be based on an assessment of historic data for Pend Oreille Basin streams. Sampling may occur in any watershed or stream located within the Basin. Data will be collected either to validate historic data, fill data gaps, or to collect information in areas that have not been surveyed. There are two components of this Sample Design: 1) abundance assessment, 2) spatial distribution (extent)

When a stream has been selected for assessment, sampling efforts and locations will either be opportunistic, based on historic sampling locations, or newly established as baseline information. Typically, the habitat has been or will be delineated into reaches (stratum) based on prior habitat survey breaks or if not, will be separated into 1km reaches using ArcGIS. When possible, each reach will be delineated into 100m Sampling Units (sites). Reaches selected for a fish abundance assessment, will be drawn at random (drawn) with a minimum of one 100m sites per 1km, unless historic monitoring sites are established.  Abundance assessments of the resident salmonid populations will be conducted at each selected project site. Prior to conducting the assessments, each site will be evaluated in the field to ensure it contains representative habitat; if not, an alternative randomly sampled site will be chosen. If no fish are observed in a selected site, a secondary site within the reach will be assessed.

For the secondary component, single-pass electrofishing will be conducted in a non-random fashion at the upper extent of known fish distribution, to determine the spatial extent of the population; this is a simple presence/absence survey to define total extent (i.e., upstream, downstream). This will occur until no fish are observed for a minimum of 300m, and habitat components (features) exists that could preclude upstream fish passage. At this point, environment DNA (eDNA) samples will be collected at 200-300m intervals (minimum of 2 samples) beyond the electrofished area.

The assessments will be conducted within the standard sampling window (June-September), as opportunities are presented, or data needs occur.

Area of Inference

HUC4 - Sub Basin: Priest
HUC4 - Sub Basin: Pend Oreille

AOI Notes

Locations will be determined based on an assessment of available data but will include watersheds and specific tributaries located within the HUC 4 Pend Oreille and Priest Sub Basins.

Sampling Schedule
This section describes which sites are scheduled to be sampled in any given year, and (if applicable) the panel and stratum that the sample site belongs to.

Plan Description

No sites have been selected as all available data will be reviewed for watersheds within the Pend Oreille and Priest HUC4 Sub Basins. Sites will be generated based on data needs and will be located in various streams and watersheds throughout the area of inference.
