This sample design refers to the sampling of both adult and juvenile spring chinook salmon for genetic tissue to monitor recovery efforts, which may include supplementation and/or reintroduction actions. Adults are typically intercepted and sampled at weir or trap facilities, while juveniles may be sampled during their downstream migration at rotary screw traps or via in-river sampling techniques such as seining or snerding. 

We use this sample design to monitor the reintroduction and supplementation of spring chinook salmon in the Klickitat River basin. There are adult trapping facilities at Lyle Falls, the Klickitat Hatchery and Castile Falls (as you move upstream). Juveniles may be trapped at a floating rotary screw trap, or detected by a floating PIT array, both in the lower river. A rotary screw trap may be placed in the upper reaches, above Castile Falls, but other sampling methods (i.e., seining, snerding) may be more practical given limitations to year-round accessibility.
